Marriage Advice from the First Couple

When I think about phenomenal married couples, there are few greater than Barack and Michelle Obama. Loving each other, growing closer, building a future, parenting wonderful children …all this while setting a positive example for all to see.  An example that constantly contradicts the one the media uses to define the Black family.  The Obamas are re-writing the script by their own definition and brand standards.

When asked their secret to sustaining a successful and thriving marriage for 20 years, the couple had this to say…

Michelle Obama:  “As my husband would say, just make her happy. Make her happy and continue to be friends… it’s the friendship that gets you through the tough times.  We’re man and wife, we deal with our kids.  I try not to get in his head. He’s got a lot of wonderful advisors and they are talking through what they are going to do and it’s just better for me to be his rock.”
President Obama:   “Seek out a woman with good genes, and then marry her. For the gentlemen out there who are not yet married, let me just explain to you: Your goal is to improve your gene pool by marrying somebody who is superior to you.”

Reading Michelle Obama’s thoughts about her marriage to Barack she spoke of the importance of friendships. This reminds me of a favorite quote... "The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had." And regarding love --- “Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss and ends with a tear.”
